Former Sudanese PM dies in Corona
Former Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi has died of the corona virus after being treated at a hospital in the United Arab Emirates for the past three weeks.
According to media reports, a statement has been issued by the family and party sources of 84-year-old Sudanese leader and former Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi. He was previously admitted to a hospital in the United Arab Emirates.
The military overthrew Sadiq al-Mahdi in 1989 and replaced him with former President Omar al-Bashir. Despite being ousted from power, Sadiq al-Mahdi remained a very influential figure in Sudanese politics. Under Omar al-Bashir, Mehdi's moderate Ummah party was the largest opposition political party.
Last month, Sadiq al-Mahdi's family said he tested positive for the corona virus and was transferred to the United Arab Emirates for better treatment after being hospitalized in Sudan for a few days.
A statement from the party of former Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi said that his funeral would be held on Friday in the Sudanese city of Ammar.
Sadiq al-Mahdi returned to Sudan in December 2018 after a year of self-imposed exile. At that time, the country's poor economic situation and protests against Bashir's government had intensified.
